Thank you for your interest in the Texas A&M University Police Department. Police Communications is a very demanding and professional position.  We are responsible for dispatching calls for police service and providing accurate and concise information in support of police and security field units.  It is a highly stressful position that requires, quick decision making, multitasking and a high responsibility for lives, property and security information.  Our Communication Officers perform a crucial function for the University as part of our dispatch team so our hiring process for them is more extensive than for other positions.

Hiring Process Steps


Below is an outline of the steps in the hiring process. Each step must be successfully completed to progress to the next phase.

  1. Applications:  Check our webpage https://jobpath.tamu.edu/​ for current opening. Depending on qualifications, a recruiter will then contact you to complete a typing test.

  3. Personal History Statement: A comprehensive personal background document required in addition to the basic application. Candidates may be disqualified for failure to provide required documents, and for omissions, misrepresentations, or falsificat​ions on the PHS.​​​
  4. Typing Test: Each applicant will be required to successfully complete a test. Applicants who fail to take the test on the scheduled dates will be disqualified. Only candidates receiving a passing grade on the typing test will proceed to the next step.
  5. Dispatch Examination: Each applicant will be required to successfully complete a computer-based simulation test that evaluates general skills performed by a Telecommunications Operator.  Applicants who fail to take the examination on the scheduled dates will be disqualified. Only candidates receiving a passing grade on the Communication examination will proceed to the next step. 
  6. Preliminary Interview: Applicants will be asked to appear before the Lieutenant of Recruitment and Personnel for a​ preliminary interview.
  7. Background Investigation: A thorough investigation is conducted on each applicant.
  8. Oral Interview Board: Results of background investigation will be reviewed by selected interview panel.
  9. Final Board: Those that pass the Oral Interview will be recommended to the Chief of Police.
  10. Chief's Interview: Applicants who successfully complete all previous phases of the application process will interview with the Chief of Police.
